Design a Protective Case Design Brief

ClientEarbud manufacturer
Target ConsumerEarbud customer
Designer(s)Jack Nelson
Problem StatementWhat is the problem? A manufacturer of high-end earbuds has received complaints from customers that the wiring for model E123 is susceptible to pulling free from each earpiece when carried in pockets and bags. In addition to strengthening the wire connections, the manufacturer would like to supply a protective case for the earbuds that will further protect the device from damage. Who has the problem? Earbud customers. Where is the problem happening? All markets across the world report similar issues with wiring pulling free of the earpieces. Why is the problem important? The company has experienced a significant loss in earbud market share corresponding to the increase in earbud complaints.
Design Statement
CriteriaThe case must be composed of two components connected by a hinge mechanism. The design must allow easy insertion of the earbuds into the case such that it requires an average user 7 seconds or less to secure the earbuds in the case. The case must securely store and protect the earbuds from damage and not break or open when carried in a pants pocket or loosely in a purse or bag. The design will include vent holes to allow air circulation into the case but not allow any part of the earbud(s) to protrude through the hole(s).The max interior volume of 3.5 inches. The minimum interior volume is 2.5
Constraints[Time] A design must be submitted for critical review by March 1st at the end of class.  (Optional) A 3D-printed prototype must be submitted by stl. 3/2.Due to limitations in production, the maximum volume of prototyping material is 3in^2. the maximum print time is 2 hours.
DeliverablesPhase I – Proof of Concept OnlyInitial conceptual sketches – at least 3A multiview drawing detailing each component of the preliminary design (Optional) A 3D-printed prototype of the designDocumentation of total material volume and print time for prototypeProof of Concept StatementProject Reflection
  1. Plan your learning. Make a list of your goals for this project. What will you try to learn or achieve while completing this project? I will make a case to hold headphones.
  2. Design a case that can hold headphones, that is more convenient than the competitors, and fits all the criteria.

  5.  Write a brief statement to describe your proposed solution and prototype. Answer the following questions:
    1. Why does your preliminary design merit further development? I could make the print quality higher, and make it look nicer. That is, why is this solution worth pursuing? It would make the product better, and make the client prefer it over the competitors.
    2. What are your suggested next steps for design iteration that would improve the design? Make the print quality higher.
    3. Could you add criteria or constraints to the design brief that would improve your ability to more effectively compare potential solutions? The criteria could be a minimum layer size or maximum print speed.

  9. If I were to do it again, I would take more time to optimize the print quality, and also try a different latch.
